At the Global Perspectives Initiative's dinner dialogue at the #WorldHealthSummit, we asked Elhadj As Sy, Chair of at of the Kofi Annan Foundation: Can young African entrepreneurs substitute public health institutions on the African continent?

One of the biggest challenges in the global south is strengthening the #healthcare system. While there are 84 doctors for every 10,000 people in this country, the #WHO calculates an average of just under 3 doctors per 10,000 people for the entire African continent. In many places, health care facilities are far away, the equipment is inadequate, and the services are expensive. Most people must pay out of their own pockets - hardly anyone has health insurance. "Covid-19 has revealed many of the dysfunctionalities and then the insufficiencies in #Sub-Sahara Africa," notes Elhadj As Sy, chairman of the Kofi Annan Foundation and longtime head of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. "The motto has become “Health Care System Strengthening” because we have seen the weakness of the system in terms of first of all physical infrastructure."

#Digitalization is allowing great leaps in development in the health sector, and a growing number of young entrepreneurs are taking up the challenges. " Young Africans that know the context, but also at the same time have the knowledge, have the drive, have the creativity, (that) are very much needed in that journey." Elhadj As Sy said. We featured four of these promising forerunners - from #Ghana, #Kenya and #Uganda - at this year's World Health Summit. Their innovations can and should also be used in Europe - to individualize treatments, improve early detection of diseases and predict their spread.
