The rim and face method of shaft alignment..
is a technique used to check the alignment between two shafts,..
such as a motor shaft and a pump shaft..
The method involves measuring the distance between the face of the coupling and the rim of the coupling at four points.
and then comparing the measurements to determine if the shafts are aligned.

1 Mount the dial indicator on a magnetic base and position it so that the probe is pointing towards the coupling face..

2 Place the dial indicator probe against the face of the coupling, and zero the indicator....

3 Rotate the shaft so that the indicator probe is pointing towards the rim of the coupling...

4 Measure the distance between the indicator probe and the rim of the coupling at the top,.
bottom, left, and right positions of the coupling.
5 Rotate the shaft 180 degrees and repeat the measurements..

6 Compare the measurements taken in steps 4 and 5. If the measurements are within the acceptable tolerance range, the shafts are aligned. If not, adjustments will need to be made.
