Walking in figure-8s is one of the easiest ways to teach loose leash walking. The reason that I love figure-8s is because there is an infinite directional change.... you're constantly changing directions, with turns to the left, and turns to the right. This helps develop more human-centered behavior (the dog develops an awareness of the human attached to the end of the leash!), which is beneficial with loose leash walking! You can do figure-8s for as long as necessary, until the dog starts to pay attention to you, checks in more often, with less pulling on the leash, and less frantic/hectic behavior. We don't want to see the dog wrapping all around you, with tangled leash, refusing to walk and/or pulling ahead. All of these behaviors may happen in the beginning, though! Only walk forward in a straight path when the dog is walking nicely on the leash. If the dog is NOT walking nicely on the leash, resume the figure-8 pattern until behavior improves.

Practice this in your driveway, backyard, front yard, wide open spaces, on pavement, and/or in the grass... You can drive your dog to an alternate location (if where you live is too stimulating) and walk in figure-8s in the parking lot of shopping center. Walking on pavement is generally easier than walking in grass, because there are less smells. Walking in big open spaces (a big field, a big parking lot) is generally easier because distractions are farther away. If something is stimulating to your dog, you can pause the figure-8 pattern and do Name and Explain, or you can stick to the pattern and continue the pattern until the dog calms down. You can try both options to see what works best, for your dog!
