The Kailasa temple at Ellora is already wrapped in mystery, but here are some lesser-known, fascinating bits of history and legends that most people don’t know:
1. One Single Rock, No Foundations – Unlike most temples that rise from the ground up, Kailasa was carved top–down from a single monolithic rock. The entire mountain was chipped away until the temple “emerged.” This is still considered one of the boldest architectural experiments in history.
2. The “Legend of Rashtrakuta King’s Queen” – According to folklore, a queen once prayed to Lord Shiva that she would fast until she could see the temple’s Shikhara (spire). The king, afraid of her health, promised completion within a week. The architect, Kokasa from Paithan, carved downwards instead of upwards, revealing the spire first in record time.
3. No Written Records of Construction – Despite being such a marvel, ancient texts are strangely silent about the Kailasa’s construction. Neither Rashtrakuta inscriptions nor detailed scripts describe how it was built—fueling theories of lost knowledge or even “divine intervention.”

4. Tool Marks Still Visible – If you look closely at the walls and courtyards, you can still see the original chisel marks—like frozen signatures of craftsmen from 1,200 years ago.
5. Vastu Shastra Alignment – The temple isn’t just randomly placed. It’s aligned perfectly with cardinal directions and cosmic principles, suggesting advanced astronomical and engineering knowledge.
6. “Impossible” Volume Removed – Archaeologists estimate over 200,000 tons of rock were excavated—yet no trace of the debris has ever been found around Ellora. To this day, no one knows where the mountain went.
7. Myth of the Flying Architects – Local legends whisper that celestial beings, not humans, guided the carving—because the precision and scale seem almost beyond medieval technology.
