Beneath the bustling streets of Naples lies a danger far greater than Vesuvius: the 12 km wide supervolcano called Campi Flegrei ("The Burning Fields"). For the first time in generations, this geological titan is showing signs of a violent reawakening, with the ground swelling, shaking, and cracking.

Bradyseism (Ground Uplift): The town of Pozzuoli, at the caldera's heart, has been lifted by about 4 meters (13 feet) since the 1950s, with a new phase of unrest starting in 2005. This rising ground is an unnerving reminder of the power simmering beneath the city.
Earthquake Swarms: Tens of thousands of earthquakes have recently rattled the volcano, including the most powerful tremors to hit the region in over 40 years: a magnitude 4.4 quake in May 2024 and a magnitude 4.6 quake in June 2025.
Volcanic Breathing: Steaming fumaroles, or vents, release a pungent, sulfurous cocktail of gases directly from the magma chamber, a direct atmospheric link to the molten rock miles underground.

Campi Flegrei is capable of continental devastation, having been responsible for some of the most violent geological events in European history, including the catastrophic VEI 7 Campanian Ignimbrite eruption 39,000 years ago, which helped carve out the massive caldera. A realistic eruption possibility today is a VEI 5 event, which would lead to a blast of unimaginable force, sending deadly pyroclastic currents flowing across the landscape. These superheated clouds could travel over 15 km, potentially reaching the dense heart of Naples.

Scientists at Italy's INGV have the volcano on a yellow alert level, acknowledging that the system is under more stress than at any point in the last half-century. The question hanging over Naples' millions of residents is not whether the burning fields will erupt again, but whether they will have enough warning.
