Описание к видео 1P~1M: Lunar Imbrium impact basin

The Moon is covered by impact craters so big that some are visible with the naked eyes – the Lunar impact basins.

Were they formed during a “lunar cataclysm” as some suggest? In other words, were they all form during a very short geological time around 4 Billion years ago, or rather was it business as usual with a constant asteroid bombardment decreasing in intensity since the beginning of the formation of the solar system – Investigating this issue require precise knowledge of the age of each of the lunar impact basins; in this study we focus on the Imbrium impact basin were we provide new ages and review and quality-filter existing U-Pb, 40Ar/39Ar, Rb/Sr and Nd/Sm isotopic ages from the Apollo Moon collection from five landing sites.

This paper was published in late 2020 in Chemistry der Erde (now Geochemistry) with Alexander Nemchin, Nick Timms and myself from Curtin university and an international team including Tao Long, Yusheng Wan and Dunyi Liu from China, Brad Jolliff and Ryan Zeigler from USA, and Josh Snape, Marion Grange and Marin Whiteouse from Sweden.

I am a professor at the school of Earth and Planetary Sciences and the director of the Western Australia Argon Isotope Facility, which is part the John De Laeter Centre at Curtin University. I am also part of SSTC and TiGER. The laboratory is supported by AuScope.

If you want to know a bit more but don't have time to check the article, you can watch the "1P~1M" (1 paper in ~ 1 minute) video below which is a quick ~ 1 minute accessible rundown of the paper. This video is part of the series 1P~1M: the anthology edition, where I present papers that we published in between 2018 and 2020 and which I think might be of interest to some of you (or informative as a video).
