Brazil’s former president, Jair Bolsonaro, is testifying before the country’s Supreme Court over his alleged role in coup attempt to overthrow his successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro narrowly lost the 2022 presidential election to Lula da Silva, but he is charged with conspiring to stage a military intervention and annul the result. Bolsonaro was later handed an 8-year election ban for undermining confidence in the election. If he’s also found guilty of plotting a coup, Bolsonaro could face up to 40 years in prison.
