This week on American Black Journal: We're kicking off Black History Month with a look at three music genres and their connection to the African American experience.

Host Stephen Henderson talks with Stacey Holman, producer/director of the new PBS docuseries, "GOSPEL," featuring Henry Louis Gates, Jr., about the rich history of gospel music and its impact on sermons and songs in the Black church. They also discuss Detroit's gospel connection and how other music genres have been influenced by gospel.

Then, Henderson sits down with techno pioneer and Grammy-nominated music producer Carl Craig, a leading figure in the second wave of Detroit techno music, for a conversation about techno's African American roots in Detroit.

Plus, we end the show with a performance by the first-place winner in the Senior Division of the 27th annual Sphinx Finals Competition: violinist Nathan Amaral.
