There were no upsets in the New River District Friday night, but the games were full of excitement. The biggest news was Dublin’s win over Radford, the two-time defending state champs, handing the Bobcats their second loss of the season. Pulaski also shut out Blacksburg. Full stories on those games are on Page 6 of today’s sports section. Elsewhere, Giles stayed unbeaten in three games by pounding Floyd 29-6, and Carroll County edged Narrows 12-7. Christiansburg had the night off. In the Galax game, the district’s leading scorer and rusher, Russ Brown, added three more touchdowns (bringing his total to 48 points) to lead Bill Bryant’s Maroon Tide to a 29-6 win. Galax scored 8 in the first quarter and led 15-0 at halftime, but the margin narrowed to 15-6 before Brown’s runs of 2 and 8 yards and a 5-yard pass from quarterback LaRue sealed the deal. LaRue also ran for a score and converted two 2-point tries. Stewart scored Floyd’s only TD, their second of the year.

Narrows shocked Carroll with a 7-0 halftime lead after Carroll’s big win over George Wythe last week. Joey Turner scored on a 9-yard run with Jeff Mullins adding the PAT, but receiver Buddy Bruce caught two touchdown passes in the second half from Greg Gravley, the manager-turned-quarterback, giving him four TD passes in two games. At Wytheville, GW missed both extra point attempts when passes from George James fell incomplete, allowing Giles to rebound for a 14-12 win. GW struck first with a 47-yard touchdown run by James to lead 6-0 at the half, but in the third quarter, Spartan QB Alvin Jones connected with Bruce White for a 7-yard score.
