Dr Abdul Samad visits Samadhi of Akali Phoola Singh at Nowshera, Pakistan

Nestled on the banks of the Kabul River, the Samadhi of Akali Phoola Singh at Pir Sabak, stands as a historic marker of a battle fought two centuries ago. Akali Phoola Singh was cremated here after falling in the fierce Battle of Nowshera in 1823, where he led his Sikh forces against local Pashtun irregulars and Afghan forces led by Azim Khan.

Adjacent to the Samadhi is a Gurdwara and a bricked structure known locally as the "Sikh Barrack," likely serving as a guesthouse and cookhouse for Sikh pilgrims. These edifices, built in his memory after the battle, have witnessed the ebb and flow of time and tides, literally. In 2010, devastating floods submerged the site, causing significant damage to these historical landmarks.

Dr Abdul Samad, Director of Archaeology & Museums, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recently visited this neglected site to assess the damages and initiate plans for its conservation. These efforts aim to restore the Samadhi and its surroundings, ensuring accessibility for Sikh history enthusiasts and fostering cultural tourism.

This endeavour is an an opportunity to rekindle interest in a shared history etched on the banks of the Kabul River. (Ali Jan)
