Hey peeps, I'm finishing my exploration of the Squonker Team oeuvre and I hope you'll join me! The recent release of a number of QoL fixes for the earliest Squonker wads by fellow community member Devalaous pushed my interest in one particular output: Squonker 3, an 8-map, vanilla-compatible episode released in 2021. According to the Doom Wiki, Squonker 3 is the first notable release of the group, using "textures from various 90s PWADs". Onward with the Squonk!

Welp, one can't say that we haven't been entertained in a variety of ways. Closing off Squonker 3 is this super-intimidating slaughter fest where your leeway is small, the chonk is everywhere, the hamburgering and pincering are acute, and mercy is in short supply. I think the hell nobles are the greatest problem of all, forming a huge collective mass that blocks movement more effectively than you'd like to see. It's very important early on to keep moving and herd the beasts so as to avoid a fatal case of flanking, while cutting down the numbers to ensure an adequate level of freedom of action. Reaching the BFG is an issue as well, as it's an essential weapon if you want to liberate yourself from the terrible squeeze and speed things up. Theoretically you could mix it up and head for the red door directly because this releases two cybers and two masterminds; unfortunately the archies are also going to show up before that, stirring up more trouble in an already very troubled soup. Not too pleasant since I'm a sucker for quieter maps, but I've learned a thing or two about moving, slow pushing, rev rocket dodging, and the like.
