India takes another major step toward self-reliance in aviation with the launch of the Dhruv-NG, a next-generation civil helicopter developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
Calling it more than just a flying machine, HAL Chairman and Managing Director DK Sunil said the Dhruv-NG represents India’s growing engineering strength and indigenous capability. Designed and built largely in India, nearly 65% of the helicopter’s components are domestically sourced, with a target to exceed 80% indigenisation in the future.
Powered by an indigenously developed and civil-certified engine, the Dhruv-NG is designed for multiple roles including VIP transport, medical evacuation, offshore operations, and high-altitude missions. The helicopter is capable of operating above 4,500 metres, making it suitable for challenging regions such as the Himalayas and Northeast India.
The aircraft features a modern glass cockpit, improved controls, and a twin-engine configuration, enhancing safety, reliability, and pilot comfort. Indian Army and Air Force pilots have already tested the helicopter under demanding conditions, and it is now ready for civilian operations.
The first batch of eight Dhruv-NG helicopters will be deployed for offshore services at Bombay High, supporting energy operations by transporting personnel and equipment.
With strong domestic demand and export potential to regions like Africa and Southeast Asia, the Dhruv-NG marks a significant milestone in India’s journey toward becoming a global aerospace power.
