Warren G. Magnuson Park, Located at 7400 Sand Point Way NE is the second-largest park/recreation complex in Seattle. featuring many hiking trails, sports fields and community center.
Starting out in 1900 as Carkeek Park, it was taken over by the U.S. Navy who started building on the site in 1922. becoming Naval Air Station Seattle in 1926, but was deactivated in 1970. In 1975 the Navy gifted most of the land to the city for the park, splitting a small portion with NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). In 1977 the remaining portion was re-named “Warren G. Magnuson Park” in honor of longtime U.S. Senator Warren Magnuson, a former naval officer from Seattle.
Today, Magnuson Park features several sports fields, a picnic area, community center, a swimming beach, public sailboating,[9] many paths for walking and bicycling, a dog park or off-leash dog area and the perfect kite flying hill, which is a large grassy man-made hill constructed in the 1980s. It contains earth and pavement pieces from the old airfield runway. Vehicle access includes multiple entrances along Sandpoint Way on 65th and 74th. There are also boat launch ramps and large parking lots for cars, trucks, and boat trailers. A great park with a little something for all ages and recreation levels.
