Is the Pearl Bass Drum Hoop Protector Worth It?

Let's look at Pearl's recommended Bass Drum Hoop Protector, model HPP-2 (sometimes listed as HPP2). This is a metal protector made for wooden hoops, with an optional non-slip surface that can be applied. As a test, I've show how to apply this to my old Pearl Prestige Session Select drums.
