In the year 1902, 2nd April, in a place called "kasur" , which was a part of Punjab province British India USTAD BADE GULAAM ALI KHAN was born. He was also known as "sabrang". He started his career as a sarangi player from the age of seven. He learned under his paternal uncle kale khan who was an exponent in Hindustani Classical music. Ustad khan became very popular as a singer after his debut performance in Kolkata.
After the partition of India, khan went back to Pakistan but came back to India to reside permanently. He acquired Indian citizenship in the year 1957 and lived at various times in Bombay, Lahore, Kolkata and Hyderabad. Ustad ji did not approve of singing for movies. Only one exception could be found as he was convinced to sing for the 1960 block buster "mughal -- e-azam".
He never believed in too much exposition of a raga rather his renditions landed straight away into the bandish with sweetness,flexibility and effortless movement spanning over 3 octaves. Thumris like "yaad piya ki", "aye na balaam" are still very popular amongst the new generation India and Pakistan. Ustad ji has great many recordings and rare collection recordings with Hindustan and megaphone records. Renditions like Baju Band Khul Khul -- (Bhairwi Bhar), ballam aye jann (dhun),ham sang tum sang (lalit), kheyal --raag behaag-vilambit ek taal, kurbaan se mariye (pahari),piya man mandira (kalengra), thumri-mishra behag-tri taal, tore naina jadu(thumri) are one of the golden recordings and collection by Hindustan records.
Ustad bade gulaam ali khan saab was awarded "sangeet natak acabemy awards" and "padma bhushan" in 1962.He died in 1968, in Hyderabad.
