Background🇰🇪
The idea for a modern railway system in Kenya dates back to the colonial era, with the construction of the Uganda Railway, commonly known as the "Lunatic Express," which was completed in 1901. This old meter-gauge railway linked the port city of Mombasa to the hinterlands of Kenya and Uganda, playing a crucial role in the region's development.

Concept and Development
As Kenya's economy grew, the limitations of the old railway became apparent, leading to the conceptualization of a new, modern railway system. The Standard Gauge Railway project was initiated to address these limitations, reduce transportation costs, and enhance connectivity within the region.

Construction
The construction of the SGR began in 2013, with funding from the Chinese government through a loan from the Export-Import Bank of China. The China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) was contracted to build the railway. The project was divided into two main phases:

Phase 1: Nairobi to Mombasa (472 km)

Completed and inaugurated on May 31, 2017.
This phase significantly reduced travel time between Nairobi and Mombasa from over 10 hours by road to about 4-5 hours by train.
