Navajo Cake with Grandma

Описание к видео Navajo Cake with Grandma

Over the summer my great grandma kept mentioning how she wanted to make some áłkaad, which is Navajo Cake.

My mother and I finally decided to make it possible for her by agreeing to do so. With the help of family & friends, we got the ingredients and brought over the necessary stuff needed to make Navajo cake.

It just so happened that the day we decided to make the Navajo cake, it was a hot summer day which reached 110 degrees!! This actually caused my phone to continuous over heat so I did not get as much recording done as I wished to have.

Nonetheless, we got it done and that night my younger siblings and I stayed up watching the fire until it started to get windy, blowing all through the night. The cake came good though and now she’s wanting to make another one for her birthday in December. Which we’re all looking forward to once again.

Making Navajo cake is something my mom and I enjoy doing, whether it’s for a kinaalda ceremony or just something to enjoy with family, it’s our way of keeping our culture and tradition alive.

I do hope you enjoy the video and understand that as Navajo people, we all do things slightly differently from one another but that’s what makes us unique.

We adapt and one medicine man once said, “our culture is forever changing, but it is up to us to control how it changes!”
