Outspoken critic of Apartheid Desmond Tutu has ended 10 years as Archbishop of Cape Town.

But he will remain a force in South Africa as chairman of the country's truth commission.

He attended an emotional retirement ceremony at the city's St. George's Cathedral on Sunday.

Earlier he was guest of honour at a farewell banquet.

Friends and colleagues gathered on Saturday night to say a fond farewell to Desmond Tutu, the outgoing Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town.

After a decade in the job he's earned a special place in their affections - and a popular nickname.

UPSOUND: "We raise our glasses to your health and future - The Arch"

After the banquet and celebrations, Tutu had an early start on Sunday, preparing for his retirement ceremony at St. George's Cathedral.

It was another chance for South Africans, and the head of the Anglican Church - Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey - to pay tribute to the Nobel Peace Prize winner.
