Leroy Carr recorded this with his longtime musical partner, Scrapper Blackwell, on guitar, in 1928

The song was hugely popular and covered many times
After the death of Carr in 1935, Blackwell did a few recordings with piano player Dot Rice, without much success; the song "No Good Woman Blues" shows Blackwell as the singer. A short time later Blackwell retired from the music industry.
He was rediscovered in 1959 and recorded again.
He was also an excellent piano player; herehe plays an instrumental version of How Long Blues
