Savant Caught By Gas in Own Laboratory. British scientist near death as big experiment goes wrong.

48 hours after he was found prostrate in his laboratory, suffering from the effects of a secret gas, Professors Maxwell Lefroy is making a dramatic fight for life.

Because the eminent physicians attending him at the hospital are unaware of the composition of the gas, they are unable to counter the effects directly, and are only able to give their gasping patient oxygen.

Professor Lefroy was experimenting at the Imperial College of Science with lewisite, a deadly, slow-poisoning odorless gas which overcame him once before, last spring, when he was trying to convert it into an insecticide without effect on human lungs.

Friends say that he was on the eve of a discovery of world importance, Saturday when, contrary to his habit, he went into his secret laboratory through a door which was labeled "dangerous, don't enter." An attendant found him on the verge of suffocation, and his condition still is critical.

The college authorities are leaving the laboratory contents exactly as they were when the professor collapsed, in hope of his recovery which would enable him to pick up his experiments where they ended by the accident. It is feared, however, he will not survive.
