It is not completely official yet, but Americans who do not have COVID-19 will have to start wearing masks, especially when being in dense areas, such as the supermarket or doctor's office.

This is going to be a new safety regimen that many people will take some time getting used to. Unfortunately, time is currently a precious commodity that we need to quickly learn and adapt, as this new way of life will be something we will have to do within the coming months, and possibly years.

Since N95s and surgical face masks are in high demand, we need to resort to making our own homemade face masks. Our health professionals and first responders need this. In fact, they are currently hurting, like soldiers thrown in a war with no weapons to fight nor protect themselves with. It has gotten so dreadful that they have resorted to cleaning/disinfecting their face masks and even making their own homemade face masks.

The best we can do right now is to stay at home and mitigate any potential infection from others or even from us (as we could be asymptomatic, carriers of COVID-19 without even knowing it). But if we need to go out, such as going to the doctor's office or supermarket, we need to protect ourselves and others by making sure that we have protection. In this case, face masks and eye protection, as this novel coronavirus travel in the air from 3 to 6 feet. This virus can spread from person to person through small droplets from the mouth or nose, when an infected person exhales or coughs. These droplets can then go into our mouths, nose, and eyes.

In this video, I show a very simple way of making a homemade face mask that does not involve any sewing. It just uses 3 main items with just a bandana, rope (or rubber bands or hair elastics), and twist tie. This is nowhere near as effective as N95s nor surgical face masks. It is, however, still a protective arsenal against COVID-19. The main point when wearing a cloth face mask is the "layers." The more layers you have, the more you protect your nose and mouth. And since a full head protection is ideal but not realistic, adding glasses or safety eyewear is also recommended.

No studies nor proof has been made about the novel coronavirus entering our ears, however. Though it might be a good idea to put on some earplugs, just to be safe.
