The Scala family castle of Malcesine is a castle medieval (even though the original fortress seems more ancient origin) in the town of Malcesine , a town on the bank of the north - east of Lake Garda , in the province of Verona. The castle , passed over the centuries into the hands of Longobards , Franks , Scaligeri , Venetians , Visconti , French and Austrians , was also made famous by the drawings and descriptions provided by the German writer Goethe in his Journey to Italy ( Italienische Reise , 1813 - 1817 ). A museum and a bust on site are dedicated to the writer .

In addition to the museum dedicated to Goethe , in the castle were also set up a museum of natural history of the Garda and Baldo and a museum of fishing , etc. In recent years, the tradition of weddings in the castle has spread. Next to another Scaliger castle, the Scaliger Castle of Torri del Benaco , the Malcesine Castle has been a national monument since 1902. Of notable interest is the civic bell, fused in 1442.

A first castle on the site was probably built by the Lombards around the first half of the first millennium AD. The castle was destroyed by the Franks in 590 and rebuilt by them in 806. From 1277 to 1387 , the castle was the residence of the Scaligeri. In May 1513 the leader Scipione Ugoni in the service of the Republic of Venice received the task from the Salodian administrator Daniele Dandolo to attack Malcesine, loyal to the German imperialists. At the head of 300 soldiers, joined by the inhabitants of Gargnano , attacked via lake Malcesine and stormed the castle killing 18 Terazzani and losing only 3 men; in action he captured the German castellan and a rich Veronese citizen, who were taken prisoners to Salò together with a considerable booty.
