Music publishers have been a staple of the music industry forever. Traditionally they own or co-own the vast majority of the works they control. More recently, there has been a rise in companies and self-employed individuals who do a lot of the work as a publisher, but strictly work as administrators and are not owners of the publishing. Sometimes they are called third-party administrators.

These administrators work with individual songwriters or publishing companies to provide music publishing services. They work to get metadata organized, get songs registered everywhere, and to collect and distribute royalties to their clients. Some administrators work on individual platforms like YouTube like AdRev. Others cover all the different areas of publishing - performance, mechanicals, foreign royalties - everything.

Full disclosure - I would be remiss if I didn’t mention at this point that Exploration Group is the type of publishing administrator.

Another difference between publishing administrators is that some work in a self service type of way like Songtrust - where you can sign up online. Others work in a hands-on customer service style.

But what about TuneCore or CD Baby - both of these companies work as easy to use distributors. That’s what they’re known for. They also provide some publishing services for independent songwriters such as mechanical collection.

Ideally, you should research several publishing administrators and find the best home for your catalog. We all do the same type of work, but we’re all unique. Some are more interpersonal, others have more of an online presence. Before making your decision, do your homework and find the best place for you and your music.
