Question: What are the differences between the open and closed rhinoplasty techniques?
Answer: Hello everybody, today I’m going to discuss the differences between open and closed rhinoplasty techniques. In an open rhinoplasty procedure we make a cut along the columela here, this is a horizontal milimetric cut in order to elavate all the skin and all the soft tissues of the nose like the hood of the car. But in a closed rhinoplasty we don’t open it up from here, we just do all the cuts inside without any visible scar that’s left on the columela or elsewhere around the nose. Another difference between these two techniques; in the closed technique we generally have the oppurtunity to save the important soft tissues and liguments of the nose, including the scroll ligaments and the pitanguy ligaments. These kind of ligament preservation techniques lead to less swelling and less bruising in the post op. Contraversially in the open technique we generally need to cut these ligaments and partially reconstruct them during the procedure so there's always a difference between the swelling and bruising times when we compare the open and closed techniques with each other.
