Описание к видео 3ft 6in gauge rail operation at Australian Portland Cement Ltd , Geelong

The method of supplying limestone from the Batesford quarry to the Australian & Portland Cement Ltd. (APCL) works at Fyansford went through four main phases:
horse and cart
buckets suspended on an aerial ropeway
rail- 3' 6" narrow gauge
multi-conveyor belt

The video depicts the method in which rail wagons containing the mined limestone were shunted and emptied. A diesel-elec loco, D1, was used for the hauling from the quarry; a Garrett moved the rake of wagons through the emptying process and readied them for pickup and return to the quarry.

In 1966, a crusher was installed in the quarry floor and a series of between 12 to 14 conveyor belts carried the limestone up from out of the quarry, to the works located at Fyansford, about 3 kilometres away. By 1967, this system had proven its reliability and the rail infrastructure was removed and disposed of, some items going to the Belmont Common Railway Preservation Society, today known as the Bellarine Railway. Diesel-electric loco D1, a series 1 T-class (flat cab roof), was acquired by the then Victorian Railways, renumbered T413 and placed into service on the Wodonga-Cudgewa line, where its dynamic braking capability was most ably utilised. T413 was later named 'Wesley B.McCann' and was for some years maintained by the short-lived 'T413 Preservation Society', headquartered at the Geelong loco.

The 'cementies' as they were colloquially known ceased operations in 2000. Many residents in the neighbouring suburbs, especially West Geelong and Herne Hill, would not have shed any tears, given the decades of dust pollution they'd had to endure.

I worked at the quarry as a truck driver for A.Pittman, haulage contractors, between February, 1978 and September, 1981 and was privileged to have worked with many APCL staff who had amassed years of service commencing in the 1940s: face shovel drivers and lubricators; other machinery operators who once operated the rail infrastructure. Their work and years of service was honoured and documented at the APCL Retired Staff museum, housed in the former orphanage building located at the southern end of McCurdy Road, Herne Hill. Sadly this museum was forced to close in 2013, its artefacts dispersed to places unknown. Also vanished forever, so much folklore and stories, true or possibly a bit of a stretch, about how this enterprise functioned, often by successive generations of staff. Too, workplace antics which don't bear thinking about ....
