While there are no definitive authority on who says which pageant/s are the considered the best, pageant aficionados and fans agree (in different degrees) on the criteria for the Alpha pageants/ Big Four. The criteria for inclusion in the Big Four are based on various standards imposed by different pageant portals.

However, they have certain commonalities such as the pageant's brand equity and prestige; the pageant's longevity, consistency, and history; the adherence to its cause, platform, or advocacy; the quality and quantity of candidates participating  as fielded by officially authorized national franchisees; the quality and quantity of its various pre-pageant activities, the production quality and global telecast of its finals night; the winner's post pageant duties and activities; and its popularity online as well as its social media following.
