While the federal holiday marks the unofficial start of the summer season, it’s important to remember that food safety remains a top priority while making memories in the great outdoors, such as camping, road trips, beach and pool events, and outside gatherings centered around food. Don't let foodborne illness spoil the enjoyment. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service provides food safety tips to ensure that the foods you share with your friends and family are safe.
Each year in America, roughly 128,000 people are hospitalized and 3,000 people die from foodborne illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Unfortunately, rates of foodborne illness increase during the summer months. Therefore, USDA is offering tips to help consumers learn how to protect themselves from food poisoning as they prepare and serve food outside in warmer temperatures.
