"The Mermaid's Song" (Joseph Haydn) by Gabby Nial - MacG Music Spotlight

Welcome back to the Spotlight - Gabriella Nial! This performance of “The Mermaid’s Song” highlights Gabby’s fantastic voice control and showmanship.

Gabby is our 2024 Vocal Music Captain and studies Year 12 Music and Year 12 Music Extension. She’s also a member of our Instrumental and Vocal Music program as a vocalist in MACappella, Show Choir and Vocal Harmony as well as a saxophonist in Wind Symphony. This performance is her IA2 assessment for Year 12 Music Extension.

The piece, “The Mermaid’s Song”, written by Joseph Haydn in 1794, was made to fit a poem written by his good friend Anne Hunter. It follows the story of a mermaid trying to lure ships and sailors down to their watering graves with the promise of treasure and their heart’s desire. The genre of the piece is called a Canzonetta which is a light vocal piece accompanied by piano which originated from Italy in 1560.
