A powerful invasion force made several landings and Ramla Bay was chosen for the attack on Gozo and advanced to Victoria the capital of the small island of Gozo.

9 June 1798 a massive French fleet of General Napolean Bonaparte was to bring about the end of the 268-year long rule of the Knights of Malta in just a matter of hours.
Napoleon captured Malta on the 11th of June 1798, while he was sailing his way to Egypt during the French Revolutionary Wars. The Knights offered Napoleon a safe harbour but denied Napoleon fresh water. As the Knights had lost their former fighting spirit they quickly lost to the French and had to leave Malta. It was in this context that on 26 May 1797 Napoleon suggested to the Directory the conquest of Malta. The island, it appeared to him, was an important pawn in the projected Mediterranean strategy, whose final aim was to use Egypt as a stepping stone to reach and destroy British interest in India.
