On September 15, 2024, the beautiful city of Sonoma, known as a popular tourist destination in California’s wine country, is abuzz with excitement. Just an hour’s drive from San Francisco, nestled among rolling hills, Sonoma boasts a serene charm that captivates visitors. With a population of just over 10,000 as of the 2020 census, and an urban area housing more than 32,000, this picturesque city has also become home to a thriving Himalayan community. Today, more than 30 households of Sherpa families reside here, embracing the warmth and culture of Sonoma.
The city is particularly festive today, as it prepares to welcome Sherpas from different states, all gathering for a momentous occasion—the wedding ceremony of Nawang Phinjo, the son of Nima and Mingma Chamji, with Osin, which will take place tomorrow, September 16th. Sonoma is adorned beautifully, ready to host this special celebration.
Two grandmothers (gagas) are filled with excitement, overjoyed to be part of such a joyous and meaningful event, marking a memorable day for the entire community.
