The Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus) is the longest-living vertebrate on Earth, with lifespans estimated between 250 to 500 years. Found in the icy depths of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, this elusive predator cruises at a glacial pace — just 2.6 km/h — through waters as cold as -1°C to 10°C, often diving as deep as 2,200 meters.

Reaching lengths of up to 21 feet (6.4 m) and weighing over 2,200 lbs (1,000 kg)3, it’s a true leviathan of the deep. Despite its size, it’s rarely seen and was only filmed in its natural habitat for the first time in 2003.

Its meat is toxic to humans due to high levels of trimethylamine N-oxide, yet in Iceland, it’s fermented into a delicacy called hákarl. The shark’s slow metabolism and poor eyesight suggest it hunts sleeping prey — including seals — or scavenges carrion in the abyss.

With sexual maturity reached around 150 years, and gestation possibly lasting up to 18 years, this species is a slow-motion mystery of evolution. It’s currently listed as Vulnerable, and its deep-sea habitat makes conservation efforts challenging but crucial.
