Painting realistically with watercolor isn’t about using a bunch of colors — it’s about seeing your values. In this short watercolor tutorial, I’m showing you how to paint a silver spoon using just one brush and one color (a black mix I made myself). You’ll see how using light, mid, and dark values can make something as simple as a spoon look shiny, realistic, and full of depth — like you could pick it right up off the paper.

This little value study is one of my favorite watercolor exercises because it reminds you that painting realistically is more about understanding light than figuring out color. It’s perfect if you’ve been wanting to paint metal, practice your contrast, or just slow down to see what watercolor can really do.
