The red harvester ant or Pogonomyrmex barbatus, is one of the most common and widespread species in the genus Pogonomyrmex. These beautiful and large ants are, as their name suggests, feeding heavily on the food they prepare from the seeds, grains, and insects they harvest. These ants, sadly, have been hit pretty hard with the use of pesticides, and the spread of the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) but there are many places where these ants still thrive! Additionally as they move back into historic ranges, they bring the protected horned lizards with them as the lizards use these ants as their primary food source! Pogonomyrmex is one of the most toxic insect genera on the planet meaning drop for drop they have some of the deadliest Hymenopteran venom out there!
