Fungi are responsible for approximately two-third of the infectious plant diseases. These common yet dangerous ones caused by fungi reduce the crops, create markings, affect the flowers and fruits, finally causing death of the plant. As a great savior in this war against fungi, Bordeaux mixture have been used safely for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years to control fungal infections in plants. This life-saving mixture has been approved by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, as an organic fungicide.

Here is the method for making 40 litres of the useful Bordeaux mixture. For the first mixture, add 400 gm of Copper Sulphate into 20 litres of water and mix thoroughly. For the second mixture, add 400 grams of pure calcium in approximately 20 litres of water and mix. After both mixtures are prepared well, slowly add the first mixture into the second mixture. Keep on stirring with a stick while combining those mixture. Do not to add the second mixture
to the first one, to avoid consequences.

Farmers can make their own mixture and use it whenever required for controlling infestation in coconut trees. Ensure the mixture is not acidic in nature; it should either be neutral or basic. In order to check the acidic nature of the mixture, you can use the knife-rusting technique:- Put a knife in the mixture for 2 minutes. If the knife has rusted after the 2 minutes, then the mixture can be acidic in nature. You can add calcium to the mixture, and stir again with the knife. If the knife has not rusted after 2 minutes, the mixture can be confirmed either neutral or basic.

Kindly note two things while using mixture. First, always use freshly used Bordeaux mixture & try not to store the mixture. Second, during the rainy days, mix Gingelly oil or Groundnut oil with the Bordeaux mixture to prevent washing off from rain.
