While moderate drinking is often portrayed as harmless—or even socially acceptable—alcohol is actually harmful to the body, even at doses many people consider “normal.” Research shows that liver disease, one of the most serious long-term consequences of alcohol use, can begin to develop from as little as 4 units of alcohol per day—which is roughly equivalent to two standard glasses of wine or two pints of beer.

The liver is responsible for breaking down alcohol, but even small, regular amounts can cause inflammation and damage over time. This can lead to fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, and eventually cirrhosis, even in people who wouldn’t classify themselves as heavy drinkers. And the damage isn’t limited to the liver—alcohol also increases the risk of certain cancers, heart disease, mental health issues, and dependency.
