Vordingborg is a former market town in South Zealand and is the capital of Vordingborg Municipality, which belongs to Region Zealand. The city is located at Masnedsund and is connected to Masnedø via a bridge and further over the Storstrømsbroen to Falster.

Vordingborg has 12,093 inhabitants (2025) and 18,118 including the satellite towns of Nyråd, Ørslev and Stensved, which are located respectively. 1, 3 and 5 km from the city limits. These towns are old villages that have developed into satellite towns because the estates Rosenfeldt, Iselingen and Marienlyst make it difficult to develop an overall urban area in Vordingborg.

Vordingborg is an old ferry town with a rich history. The ruins of the old royal castle, which was the home of three Valdemar kings, are the city's most important attraction. The only fully preserved part, the Goose Tower, is the city's landmark. There is also a historical-botanical garden on the ramparts; it was created in 1921 by landscape architect G.N. Brandt based on the oldest Danish garden book from 1647 Horticultura Danica by Hans Raszmussøn Block. The town's church, Vor Frue Kirke, dates from 1388 and is located on the church meadow, from which the remains of a moat extend to the castle ruins.

Vordingborg has a high school, a trade school, a seminary, barracks and a railway station and is the home town of Denmark's Castle Center, the former South Zealand Museum. There is a hospital for the mentally ill on the Oringe peninsula. The town has three harbours, two of which are marinas and an industrial harbour. Along the coast at Storstrømmen lies the popular Ore Strand. Every year in July, the town festival Vordingborg Festuge is held and the award-winning Prince Jørgen's Guard is associated with the town. In odd years in August, the international theatre festival Waves is held, organised by the town's regional theatre Cantabile 2.

Gl. Vordingborg Municipality was formed in 1970 and was located in Storstrøm County until the Local Government Reform of 2007. The current Vordingborg Municipality was formed by merging Langebæk Municipality, Møn Municipality, Præstø Municipality and Old Vordingborg Municipality.
