This morning, I woke up with a heavy heart… Another one of my chickens had died — the second one. Not long ago, I lost the first, and now it happened again. I quietly dug a small grave beside the first one, buried it, and sprinkled lime around the coop to disinfect. I don’t know what kind of illness they had… all I can do is keep things clean and hope the rest stay safe.

Then the rain started. A mountain summer rain – not freezing cold, but enough to seep into your chest. I was tired, but I had promised a local woman I would help her harvest peanuts today. So I wrapped a scarf, packed my tools, and walked out into the rain.

Thankfully, she showed up too. We worked side by side in silence – heads down, hands moving, no need for words.

And while I was still out there, soaked and unaware… my mother-in-law – someone who hadn’t visited in so long – suddenly came looking for me.
