Matter, mass, volume and density Study notes | Teaching Chemistry | High School Chemistry - Density
How are density, mass & volume related? Mass, Volume & Density Simple & easy way to calculate by using density formula:
Density= Mass/Volume or D=M/V
Mass, volume and density are three of an object’s most basic properties. Mass is how heavy something is, volume tells you how big it is, and density is mass divided by volume.
Mass – Measurement of the amount of matter in an object or substance. It refers to the total amount of matter present in an object. Mass of an object always remains constant. It does not change, no matter where that object is in the universe. It will have the same mass. It doesn't matter if you are close to the earth or away from the earth, your mass will always be the same but your weight will be keep changing. Unlike weight, mass doesn’t change due to changes in gravity. We use a balance to measure mass. SI unit of density is kg.
Volume – How much space an object or substance takes up. Volume is the amount of space occupied by an object. Measured in cubic meters (m3 ), liters (L) & milliliters (mL). We use measuring cups (like the ones in your kitchen!) to find out how much volume a substance has, though we can also find the volume of an object by measuring its sides. SI unit of volume is m3.
Formula for rectangular or cubical shapes:
V= L x W x H
Density – Density is the ratio of how much mass is in an object compared to the volume of that object. It is the amount of mass present in a unit volume of an object. SI unit of density is cubic meter (kg/m3)
Formula of density is:
Density= Mass/volume or D=M/V
Everything that exists around us is made up of a substance and that substance is called matter. In science,
Anything that takes up space and can be weighed is called matter. Matter has 3 basic properties which are mass volume and density.
