Today, I will share with you the Rwanda lunar series silver coins. The first coin was issued in 2017 and it featured the lunar rooster and it was actually minted in Germany by BH Mayer and not in Rwanda. BH Mayer is a very well establish mint. This is the first time that a lunar coin has been issued in a mosaic pattern anywhere in the world and it set off a buying frenzy around the world when it was first released.

These silver coins have weight of 1oz of 99.9% fine silver and packaged in plastic flips rather than plastic capsules. The obverse features the lunar animal in a geometric pattern with a rimless finish. The reverse features a Rwanda effigy with a legal tender value of 50 Francs.

They have a diameter of 40mm and a thickness of 3mm. They have reeded edge. They were issued in brilliant uncirculated and proof finish.

The mintage of these coins in brilliant uncirculated is not known but production ceases at the release of the following Lunar Year. These coins kept gaining in popularity around the globe as time goes on. Prices of the rooster has dropped a bit in 2020 and this year due to less demand. Looks like now is a good time to pick up some of these coins.

The mintage of the proof coins is fixed at 1000.

The next coin is the dog in 2018.
In 2019, it’s the pig. You can see the mother pig and a few baby piglets.
In 2020, the year of the rat coin was released. In 2021, the Ox coin was released. Looks pretty nice.

These are my ox coins. I do not have them with me and I have them securely stored in another country as I cannot travel in 2020 and 2021 due to covid restrictions and quarantine requirements.

Here are the proof coins. They have the same designs but they are proof finished.

A couple of days ago, the 2022 year of the tiger coin design was released. This coin has been much anticipated as these lunar coins were typically announced in the third quarter of the preceding year of issue. I guess, it’s better late than never.

The tiger coin should be hitting the shelves by mid -December 2021. I do hope to pick up a couple of these tiger coins to continue my collection. Silver is still very cheap now compared to other commodities and I do love precious metals and I believe silver is still significantly undervalued at USD25 per oz.
