The Jewel of Ceren, or the Joya de Ceren in Spanish, is an archaeological site in El Salvador which features the ruins of an ancient farming village from the Maya civilization. It's not nearly as popular as many of the other Maya sites in Central America and Mexico, yet it's shockingly well preserved. Archaeologists even refer to it as the Pompeii of the Americas because it's basically in the same state as it was 1400 years ago. Also, just like Pompeii in Italy, the Jewel of Ceren was blanketed by the ash of a nearby volcanic eruption.
It happened in the year 600 AD, when the Loma Caldera blew its top and the settlement was buried under hot ashfall. After 400 years of human habitation, the place was lost in an instant. The buildings and people who didn't manage to escape were trapped under 30 feet (9.14 m) of pyroclastic debris. It all happened in a matter of just hours.
