Safo discusses how he dealt with depression, and highlights how African patriarchal societies do not accept or allow for its citizens, and especially men, to have mental health issues. Intimacy, vulnerability, and sensitivity in men is perceived as weakness. Boys grow up suppressing emotions, and make for emotionally stagnated adults. In his talk, Safo challenges us to be accepting and supportive of those with mental health issues, and that instead of asking a friend or colleague “How are you?”, we should instead ask “What is your story?" preemptively welcoming a sincere response. Safo Akonnor is an aspiring Commercial Lawyer seeking to shift paradigms with his podcast “The Conversations in the Dark''. With his podcast, he leverages the power of conversation to provide a platform for Africans to talk about their difficult experiences with issues ranging from mental illness to ethnic privilege in African societies. He hopes to use his platform to champion causes that positively affect cultures and improve the livelihood of the African community.
