Language Teaching Innovation Grants: Spring 2023 Presentations

I would like to explore the use of wizer.me, an app that allows for the design and sharing of interactive worksheets with Spanish language students in the third and fourth semesters. Wizer.me enables the easy incorporation of a variety of text and media in visually stimulating ways. Some of the attractive features include the ability for the instructor to provide both written and recorded instructions. Students are also able to record themselves. Another feature is the insertion of images which can then be labeled to test vocabulary, etc. The initial use of this tool would be to target the acquisition of vocabulary related to health and wellbeing, illness, sports, the environment, culture, and political issues, all of which are studied in SPAN220 and SPAN240. In connection with this vocabulary, students will be also be able to produce audio and written texts along with images and drawings. This type of variety will appeal to the gamut of student learning preferences.

Gameful Design for Advanced Language Courses.

Students enter the Advanced Chinese language classrooms with various language and cultural backgrounds, needs, and learning preferences. To address learner variability issues, I would like to implement the gameful design in the Business Chinese courses curriculum, which supports diverse learners based on the concepts of personalized learning. This curriculum allows students to experience a more profound sense of achievement and promote intrinsic motivation. Students work toward a personal goal in this course and choose and experience the tasks. Students select several projects/tasks appropriate to their personal goals from the task menu to accumulate points. In contrast to the traditional grading methodology, students level up their grades with a gameful design throughout the semester. In this curriculum, students have more opportunities to take charge of their learning and stimulate motivation for deeper learning.

Language Teaching Innovation Grants offered by the Center for Languages and Cultures at the University of Southern California

Language faculty continually explore innovative methods, and adopt state-of-the-art tools so as to hone their teaching practices, thereby invigorating curricula, and their classroom. In order to commend this continuous strive for betterment, the Center for Languages and Cultures is pleased to introduce the Language Teaching Innovation Grants. These grants intend to support USC language faculty as they implement new methodologies, strategies and tools that align with the learning goals of their individual programs. Further, the grants aim at establishing a framework for sharing experiences and findings as aresult of new adoptions. The overarching goal of the grants is to:
Incentivize faculty to explore new methods/strategies/tools in language pedagogy;
Expose students to a broader range of learning opportunities, resources and tools;
Support and disseminate innovative teaching tools and techniques;
Develop inter-departmental relationships.
