Robert Plant explained in an interview with Cameron Crowe: "Not all my stuff is meant to be scrutinized. Things like 'Black Dog' are blatant, let's-do-it-in-the-bath type things, but they make their point just the same." The song was recorded at a mansion out in the country where a nameless black Labrador retriever would wander the grounds. When they needed a name for this track, which didn't have an obvious title, they thought of the pooch and went with Black Dog.

Rock and Roll makes use of the feeling of nostalgia and harks back to their life as teenagers, listening to legends like Little Richard and Chuck Berry and the way music used to sound at that time. It's also about them loving their job and being glad to be back in the studio jamming. They just love to play the old time rock and roll.

The Battle of Evermore makes references to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and a battle of swords and bows where Túrin Turambar defeats the dragon Glaurung with the help of the beautiful royal Elf Galadriel, the greatest of elven women in Middle-earth.

According to Dario Giardi, in Stairway to Heaven it’s obvious that the “Lady who’s buying a Stairway” is an allegory of a greedy, materialistic, arrogant society that believes that everything, including a path to heaven, can be acquired with money. “The West” is a reference to the mystery and allure of America, where materialism and greed are constantly at odds with peace and harmony. “Those who stand looking”, could be those with a conservative outlook, who disapprove of the winds of change and youth’s aspiration to something better.
“The bustle in the hedgerow” represents our mind, confused by the possibility of this fragile spiritual path, but the choice relies on us and our intentions to live together, in harmony with our souls and with nature. “When all are one and one is all”, together, we can really change the world around us. “To be a rock and not to roll”, in harmony with our souls and with nature.

According to Wikipedia, Misty Mountain Hop refers to the events of the 7 July 1968 "Legalise Pot Rally" in Hyde Park, London, in which police made arrests for marijuana possession. The lyrics reflect Plant's quest for a better society, a place and time when hang-ups are replaced with individual freedom and a life of mutual support and respect.

The meaning behind Four Sticks is complex, elusive, and open to interpretation. The hypnotic groove certainly stimulates introspection. According to Pablo Wood the four sticks image signifies the human senses, as well as the four elements of fire, water, air, and earth in Eastern philosophy.
As the song progresses, it becomes more abstract suggesting transformation, rebirth and an inner battle between light and darkness with Led Zeppelin inviting their listeners to join them on an eternal search for truth and freedom.

Going to California started out as a song about earthquakes as experienced by Jimmy Page in a Los Angeles mixing studio. A devastating earthquake could represent the shattered dreams of many young people in the late 60's. According to Nick DeRiso, the song also makes clear references to Joni Mitchell: 'To find a queen without a king', and 'They say she plays guitar, cries and sings” which Plant explains as summing up a period of his life when he was 22 years old.

When the Levee Breaks is a blues song written by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy in 1929, about the upheaval caused by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.
