I've been struggling with feeling so helpless against what I see in the news, specifically the Planned Parenthood videos. I've been stumped in prayer, not knowing what to do.

Several nights ago, I listened to Judy Collins in 1964 sing Bob Dylan's song "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" on my record player. Dylan's account of the flippant murder of a 51 year old black woman and the subsequent mild slap on the hand given out by the courts to her killer reminded me of the power of song to lift the voice of justice above the stifling noise. Hattie's killer got off pretty easy, but Dylan makes sure that his audience doesn't.

The refrain of 'Hattie Carroll' has stuck with me the last several days as particularly applicable:

"Oh you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears, bury the rag deep in your face. Now's the time for your tears."
