A tribute to the brilliant American wooden yacht yacht designer and architect Lyle C Hess and as well a tribute to the great American writers sailors Lyn and Larry Pardey : I created a visualisation of the 32 ft Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter designed by Lyle C Hess - a wonderful ocean capable sail boat that I did build in cold molded mahogany and strip planking with West System Epoxy Resin.

My building of a 32 ft Classic Pilot Cutter designed by American designer Lyle C. Hess as Ocean Capable sail cruiser has been done following the Gougeon Brothers book . The entire structural framing laminated in wood&epoxy resulting in the very top life span and structural toughness; The deck hardware ; rigging hardware are Silicon Bronze as per best fine boat building US standards. The interior of our Classic Cutter is Mahogany and teak; features enclosed shower; eclosed bedroom; a teak sole ; and exquisitely handcrafted fine cabinetry; routerd paneled bulkheads LOD :31.8 ft/9.5m LWL:29 ft/8.9m Beam:10.8 ft/3.3mDraft:5 ft/1.6m Displ.:16425 lbs/6.57 tons Ballast:5777 lbs/2.5 tons Berths: 4 Galley Enclosed wc&shower Diesel 24 hp Yanmar Rudder hinged on bronze hinges. Bulwark fastened on bronze cast stanchions supports ; bolted to deck. Classic Style varnished clear coated Skylight Hatch over salon. Bronze opening cabin ports. Opening hatch over bedroom Mahogany clear coated paneled bulkeheads Interior Ceiling routered spruce painted white. Icebox 199 liters. Companionway clear coated mahogany, cabin sole teak removable panels. Navigation desk with chart table Clear cotaed mahogany by the companionway Galley hinged stove with oven Double sink stainless steel Pressure water system Black water tank Double bed forward with storage underneath. The draft allows good acces to shallow waters&marinas entrances; the elegant looks make it a headturner any marina you go. We created an extended cabin and redesigned a modern interior layout; making for a private bedroom and enclosed shower&wc;air conditioning and best electrical and electronic gear and equipment West System Resin imported from USA was used throughout the building. Ten different species of wood were used. Oak and ash for framing; white spruce and larix for the strip planking; mahogany for cold moulding of hull; teak for the deck; Douglas fir for laminated deck beams; okoume waterproof marine plywood for deck. The wood was carefully selected from mills in the mountain Timber was selected knot free and radial cut; stored and left to dry until appropriate 12 % humidity We crafted the Keel and stem in laminated oak; Framing laminated in White ash, The strip planking&cold-molding wood&epoxy resin building method means 20mmx20mm strips of wood are bonded together over a positive mold on longitudinal direction, then 3 layers of 2-3mm veneer are laminated on top at complementary directions; using highly resistant and highly adhesive epoxy resins. This makes for a 30 mm thick multilayered shell extremely impact resistant and way stronger than the mass produced fiberglass boat . Strips were fastened together by bronze barbed nails imported from USA; then bonded by West System Epoxy. Frames were fastened together and to floors by siliconic bronze bolts imported frm USA. Once the epoxy hardened & hull finished with clear-coat finish/or marine best quality polyurethane paint protecting the epoxy from exposure to elements; provides a tough; leak free; low cost maintenance hull impervious to humidity variations; hull that does not shrink when vessel stored on ground for long periods. Strip planking&cold molding presents extra advantages over other construction methods: an excellent strength-to-weight ratio high rigidity. Wood epoxy built boats are keeping better their value and maintain their watertight-integrity for many years.
