In the productive patch here, Millie has used a series of simple hardwood edges to retain each, terracing the slope and providing easy access to each bed.

The bed at the top of the garden is the only area not retained, and as a result, it consistently sheds water and soil amendments, so today it’s getting an edge.

How to get the edge:

Millie is using salvaged hardwood sleepers, approx. 2.4 long (200mm high and 50mm wide) hardwood stakes and galvanised screws.
Excavate the area that will become the path between the 2 new beds to a depth of about 200mm.
Loosely position the sleepers to check the trench level using a spirit level.
When happy with the position, join the 2 sleepers screwing on a steel plate or piece of timber.
Position the sleeper edge and hammer in hardwood pegs to stabilise, on either side of the sleeper and approx. every 1m along the length. Those pegs positioned on the path side should be sunk below path level, about half the depth of the sleeper.
Fix the sleepers to the pegs by pre-drilling and using galvanised screws.
The lower side of the trench needs less retaining, so it is retained with salvaged hardwood, 35mm by 90mm. This is also secured with hardwood stakes.
To create a path between the new edges, Millie fills with arborists wood chips. They are layered with fresh poultry manure from her hens, which will help to break the paths down and compost.
Every year, the composted wood chips can be dug onto the garden, and the paths refreshed.

For a little work and some salvaged materials, a garden edge will vastly improve the productivity and accessibility of a bed. Get to it!
