As all of us know by now, the ending to Mass Effect 3 was so controversial and disappointing that fans started searching for alternatives. Petitions were made asking Bioware to change the ending. Fan theories, like the indoctrination theory, were created to provide an alternate meaning. And gamers even latched onto Bioware’s other cut ideas as a way to cope with the disappointment over the color swapped finale.

One of these ideas was the dark energy plotline, which Bioware developer Drew Karpyshyn - the lead writer for Mass Effect 1 & 2, had mentioned on his blog as a story idea that the studio had considered but never fully implemented.
