Krajina Serbs flee; Karadzic defiant

Hundreds of Serbs fleeing Croatian army attacks on the Krajina
region of eastern Croatia arrived in Banja Luka on Saturday (5/8).
Refugees from Knin streamed into the Bosnian Serb town in northern
Bosnia as the Croats pressed on with their two-day offensive,
launched to regain control of the Krajina region. UN officials
began preparing for what they fear may be the largest refugee
exodus since the war began. An estimated 35,000 people have so far
abandoned their homes and UN officials predict around 100,000 will
be evacuted over the next week. In the Bosnian Serb capital Pale,
leader Radovan Karadzic said his troops would join Croatian Serbs
in a counterattack, but UN officials said government troops from
Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina had linked up at the border cutting
a key link for the Serbs. In the Croatian capital Zagreb, Croats
were enjoying their victory. "We are very happy, and glad that it
is finally over or will be in a few months," said one woman.
