Development and Evaluation of Innovative Teaching and Learner-Centered Assessments in Postsecondary Chemistry

Abstract: Chemistry is often perceived as abstract and challenging as a subject by college students, and fundamental chemistry courses are often deemed as “gatekeepers” that prevent students from advancing to obtain STEM degrees and beyond. It is essential to engage students in learning chemistry meaningfully, so they are motivated and interested in the subject. This talk will introduce a range of innovative approaches developed by Dr. Ye and her team to improve student experiences and success in chemistry through visualization and chemical representations with online interactive simulations, holistic and meaningful learning with learner-centered assessment, and peer-led collaborative learning with the Supplemental Instruction Program. Dr. Ye’s research employs mixed methods (i.e., quantitative and qualitative approaches) to evaluate the effectiveness of innovative teaching strategies, assessment techniques, and academic programs. Implications and future research will be discussed with the audience.
A short bio: Dr. Li Ye is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at CSUN. She obtained her B.S. in Biotechnology and M.S. in Biochemical Engineering at Huaqiao University in China. After working in a biopharmaceutical company shortly, she moved to the U.S. to obtain her Ph.D. degree in Chemistry (with an emphasis on Chemistry Education Research) at the University of South Florida. Her expertise and research interests are developing and evaluating the effectiveness of innovative pedagogies, academic programs and interventions, and learner-centered assessments to improve student experiences and learning outcomes in postsecondary chemistry. Her work has been published in multiple peer review journals, including the Journal of Chemical Education, the Journal of Chemistry Education Research and Practices, and the Journal of College Science Teaching. Dr. Ye is also actively involved in offering professional development workshops for local K-12 science teachers with her science education colleagues at CSUN.
