Royal Enfield Bullet 500 WWI Exploration: Inside Fort Douaumont

In this episode, join Marty and I as we bid farewell to Freiburg and cross the beautiful Rhine River back into France. Our motorbikes purr happily as we take a breathtaking ride through the picturesque region of Alsace-Lorraine, before ascending the twisty, winding roads through the Vosges Mountains.

The real journey begins as we arrive in the historic town of Verdun. As we ride through, the remnants of World War I become more and more apparent, with old trenches flanking our road and reminders of the battles fought on these grounds present at every turn. As we ride, we pass by the solemn Douaumont Ossuary, a memorial that houses the skeletal remains of countless soldiers who fell during the Battle of Verdun.

Our day concludes with an in-depth tour of Fort Douaumont, the largest and highest fort in Verdun. We dive into its fascinating history, exploring its role during WWI, the details of its armaments including the human-powered retracting 155mm gun turret, and life in the fort.
